Church Past

History Of First New Mount

Some historical facts about New Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church which is now First New Mount Olive Missionary Baptist church. New Mount Olive had a very humble beginning. It was organized in the home of the late Rev. James A. Mason and his wife, Mrs. Dorothy M. Mason, March 18, 1953.

Two pastors were responsible for putting the church together. They were Rev. William Lambert and Rev. Ralston. Documents on file to show that twenty-six people would become members of this church. Also, seven women were appointed to form a Mother’s board. They were Mother Goodall, Mother Johnson, Mother Crockett, Mother Easley, Mother Henderson, Mother Moody and Mother Jones, These mothers would play a major role in the church history.
After out-growing Pastor Mason’s living-room, morning services were moved to Drew School portable in Princeton park and night services were held in Mother Crockett’s basement. Finally, after a period of time, a permanent home was found for the church at 8751 South State Street. And there the church remained until we moved to our present address at 2349 East 99th Street, in 1973- Rev. Mason was a pastor with a vision. His vision was to operate a Christian School…and that he did. The school was a success and the church membership increased tremendously.

On April 14, 1985, Pastor Mason was called home to be with the Lord. We were like loss sheep without a shepherd. We truly needed a shepherd to lead and guide us through the crisis that we were facing. But God did not forsake us. He sent us a pastor (Rev. Sylvester Green) to lead us out of darkness into a marvelous light.

Church Past

History Of First New Mount

Within five years, we were debt free, and the mortgage on the church was paid off in full. Under his leadership, two ministers and four Deacons were Ordained. And one of the ministers (Rev. Amos Bradford, Jr.) became Rev. Green’s assistant. He also appointed three members (from the choir) to the Mother’s board. God’s blessings were upon us spiritually and financially.

When Rev. Green retired, because of health problems, it was his wish that we would elect Rev. Bradford as our next pastor. In 1999, that wish became a reality.
Under Rev. Bradford’s leadership, two Ministers, seven Deacons, Five Evangelists, Five Pastors and two Master teachers were ordained. He appointed eight members to the Mother’s board. He instituted classes for the new members and appointed a director over religious education. Also, he has trained over twenty teachers to teach the word of God effectively. And finally, the praise and worship ministry had it’s beginning under his leadership.

Currently, we are renovating the school next door to be utilized in the church’s ministry and solicits your help with the vision. First New Mount Olive Missionary Baptist church is a testament of what GOD can do and what HE will do for his people.
